A temple dedicated to Yu the Great, the sixth of the mythical Chinese emperors considered cultural heroes and the founders of Chinese civilization, lies on a hill just outside the city of Bengbu. Yu the Great plays an important role in Chinese mythology, and there are a great many legends about him. In one of the best-known myths, in which Yu demonstrates superhuman bravery and virtue, he rescues the country from chronic flooding. After he succeeded in controlling the floods, he was made emperor, dividing the country into nine regions and founding the Xia Dynasty (ca. 2200–1800 BC). Scene at the temple entrance.
